[ARCHIVED] New Tavern Honors Mayor’s Father

Mayor Javier Joven

Mayor Javier Joven“My dad is my role model,” said Odessa Mayor Javier Joven.
Patrick Clay’s Icon Tavern honored some local athletes and coaches with pictures up in the new sports bar.  Among them, a picture of Joe Joven (Mayor Joven’s father) and Ruben Munoz Jr.
Joe was a boxing coach who trained Munoz from the young age of 9-years-old until he was in his 30’s and went Pro.
“My dad is 92-years-old and can still recount all of those stories.”
The Mayor says his dad won a Championship in the Light Weight Division in Mexico.  His dad is an American but boxed in Mexico.
Later in life, Joe trained youth in Odessa at the Central Boys and Girls Club.  He helped to train and develop countless standouts like Munoz, right here in our wonderful city of Odessa.
